Out of the Heart…

“He went on: “What comes out of a person is what defiles them.” Mark 7:20

There was a saying that was always said in my youth group growing up: ‘garbage in, garbage out.’ I remember it the most from my friend/might-as-well-have-been-brother, Sam, who still encourages his students with this saying today.

Looking back, I realize that there were so many times I used this statement ‘selectively’- most notably, I did this in my choice of music. It was so easy at the time to overlook a lyric for a great beat. I hear that a lot from students now and have come to the conclusion that we all do this in our own way. For some it’s so easy to overlook movie content… like, ‘it’s ok, as long as they don’t say THAT word’ or ‘if we just dont watch that scene, then it’s fine.’

My thought to provoke within you today is this: then why even bother with it? The Bible tells us ‘Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.’ (Proverbs 4:23)… This leads me to believe that just because you’re not repeating it out loud or replicating the actions from that movie you may not should’ve seen, that it DOES have implications. It does become somehow stored in the memory bank only to emerge some time later. So when will it emerge? When will you have enough guts to put it all down for Christ? Not completely ‘cut out’ the world- but ‘be in the world and not of the world’ so that ‘others can see the Light’ that is in you?

So what will you do today with what you see and hear? Will it effect how you treat others? How you view God – Your relationship with Him?
It should.

Just a thought 🙂
